Pornography and sex addiction

Counselling for compulsive sexual behaviour, without the lecture

Private, non judgemental work on behaviour that has stopped feeling like a choice, the shame that keeps it hidden, and the repair that follows a disclosure.

The work

The shame is usually doing more damage than the behaviour

This is the thing people carry longest before telling anyone. Often years. By the time someone says it out loud in a room, they have already run every version of the conversation in their head and assumed the worst possible reaction.

You will not get that reaction here. I have heard it. It is more common than almost anyone believes, precisely because nobody talks about it. Whatever the specifics are, they are unlikely to be the worst thing said in this room this month.

You also will not get a lecture on why it is bad for you. You know. You have probably known for a long time, and knowing has not fixed it, which is exactly the point. Compulsive behaviour is not a knowledge problem and it is not a willpower problem. It is a pattern that is doing a job, and until we work out what the job is, stopping it just leaves a hole.

What we actually work on

  • What the behaviour is regulating. Almost always something: anxiety, loneliness, anger, boredom, a feeling you have no other way to put down
  • The build up, not the moment. By the time the moment arrives the decision was made an hour ago
  • Secrecy and the double life, which is usually more exhausting than the behaviour itself
  • Escalation, if that is part of it, and what it means
  • Shame as a driver rather than a brake, because shame reliably feeds the cycle it is meant to stop
  • Practical structure: what changes in your environment, your phone, your evenings, your alone time
  • What sex and intimacy are actually for in your life, which often nobody has ever asked you

After a disclosure

If a partner has found out, or you have told them, you are in a different situation and it needs handling carefully. The betrayal is real and it deserves its own space rather than being folded into your recovery as a footnote.

In practice that often means individual work first, and couples work later, once there is something steady enough to build on. Rushing straight into joint sessions while everything is still raw tends to produce another injury rather than repair. We will talk about the sequencing rather than guessing at it.

Nobody has ever shamed themselves out of a compulsive behaviour. Plenty of people have shamed themselves deeper into one.

On privacy

Sessions are confidential, within the narrow legal limits that apply to every counsellor in New Zealand and which I will explain in full at the start. Online sessions are an option if being seen walking into a counselling room is part of what has stopped you. There is no requirement to use your full name when you first make contact.

Individual session

$190
50 minutes

Couples work after a disclosure runs 70 minutes at $230. Many people do both, individually first and together later.

Where

In person in Takapuna, or online anywhere in New Zealand. Same fee either way.

No lock in, no minimum number of sessions, and no charge for the first call.

Do I have to stop first?

No. If people could reliably stop before getting help, very few would ever need it. Come as you are, including if you did it last night.

Is this a religious programme?

No. If faith matters to you it is welcome in the room and we can work with it. If it does not, nothing here depends on it.

Will you tell me I am an addict?

Not unless you find the word useful. Some people find a label clarifying and some find it a dead end. What matters is the pattern and what it costs you, not what we call it.

How long does this take?

Longer than six sessions, usually. This kind of pattern is old and well defended, and anyone promising you a quick fix is selling something.

If you need help right now

Counselling appointments are not an emergency service. If you are in danger, or thinking about ending your life, please call 111, or call or text 1737 to speak with a trained counsellor free, any time of day or night.
